Automated catalogue generation within a content management system

How can content maintenance for a catalogue be designed in such a way that it automatically generates an attractive and well-thought-out page layout? At WirbelWild, we decided to fully automate the page layout for this catalogue and to render the layout live while updating the content. This gives everyone involved constant visual control and allows them to directly assess how well the content fits the page layout. Complex design decisions are made in the background by our application: how can images be placed, regardless of how many there are, how many lines of text need to be kept together, where can a column break be created? It is a small, fully-fledged typesetting programme that runs in the background.
